Everything worked fine until step 19 and then I get this:
 Enter your choice: 1

Please give the location to your Windows XP Setup Source Files
'CSCRIPT.EXE //NoLogo u_script\FolderSel.vbs' is not recognized as an internal o
r external command,
operable program or batch file.

Error: The path does not contain Windows XP Source Files

I don't know how to proceed. Any ideas? I have gone by the instructions.

Alex on 9.28 described a problem where it sounds like the computer that he was trying to install on didn't recognize the internal hard drive after booting. I've inserted the USB stick and the computer boots into the screen where you are supposed to select the partition to install windows on. One partition, the 1GB memory stick is displayed. I know this is an old thread, but I hope you can help me. Thanks.

With a virgin XP setup disk, this procedure failed with the error 'Value 0 on the line in section [SourceDiskFiles] with key "binifix4.cmd." Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3'

To solve this, you will need at least XP SP2. The following instructions come from http://www.vandomburg.net/installing-windows-xp-from-usb/ :

 1. Copy the Windows XP CD-ROM to a location on your hard drive. We’ll be assuming C:\winxpcd. I strongly advise you to use such a vanilla CD. Users have reported strange happenings with custom XP distributions.
 2. Download the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package.
 3. Unpack Windows XP SP2 by running WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe -x. Note the -x parameter that will allow you to specify a location to unpack to. We’ll be assuming C:\winxpsp2.
 4. Integrate SP2 into the setup files by running C:\winxpsp2\i386\update\update.exe /integrate:c:\winxpcd.

This will give you a merged setup (in C:\winxpcd). Enter this folder for step 20, and this procedure works perfectly.

VERY useful post - thanks a lot

Great instructions!!! I am wondering about a couple of things the first being I would like to add files to the drive to use for program installation after the load, such as VNC, is there a way to do this?

Second can the USB drive be partitioned into two drives say an eight GB spit into two fours and one is bootable to install from and the other can contain the other files I need to install when I am done, again such as VNC.

Thanks for the information and easy instructions.

Well hell, I am back, Got through several files it was looking for. It now complains that "ntkrnlmp.exe" is not found, but I have copied it to multiple locations of my USB drive. Still can't find it when loading files. Getting desperate. Any advice welcomed- other than the infamous "try reinstalling" been there done that.

Ok, after some sleep and another stab at my insanity, I see that the files that cannot be loaded are simply not in the WIN_NT$.!BT folder but are in fact in the WIN_NT$.!~LS folder. I tried to reformat and go through the process 3 times now and the same results. I am manually starting to copy each file that cant load, but the list is going on and on... What is the LS folder which has all of the I386 files, where the BT folder is fairly void of most system files?
